When We Two Parted - Lord Byron

When we two parted
In silence and tears,
Half broken-hearted
To sever the years,
Pale grew thy cheek and cold,
Colder, thy kiss;
Truly that hour foretold
Sorrow to this.

The dew of the morning
Sunk, chill on my brow,
It felt like the warning
Of what I feel now.
Thy vows are all broken,
And light is thy fame;
I hear thy name spoken,
And share in its shame.

They name thee before me,
A knell to mine ear;
A shudder comes o'er me...
Why wert thou so dear?
They know not I knew thee,
Who knew thee too well..
Long, long shall I rue thee,
Too deeply to tell.

In secret we met
In silence I grieve
That thy heart could forget,
Thy spirit deceive.
If I should meet thee
After long years,
How should I greet thee?
With silence and tears.

I love the work of Hiroshi Sugito.  I must admit however that when I first saw his collections the first thing that came into my mind was the similarities to that of Yoshitomo Nara.  Not suprising when I found out that they often have collaborated and did share a studio together!

Sugito's work has a strong contemporary Japanese aesthetic  and using delicate layers of acrylic and dry pigment, the he begins with an ambiguous painted space into which figurative elements are introduced.  I read that as he does this he challenges the role of art 'space' and 'site' within his chosen medium.

In the artist's words: "I start moving my brush like walking into the woods, away from everything, and I want words and meanings to lose their power and just fade away."

"I visually evoking tactile sensations such as hardness and coolness as well as intangible feelings and musical tones."
